Blake Louwrens shattered records en route to a South Coast Strongman hat-trick during the South Coast Lions’ Show at Port Shepstone Country Club on Saturday.

The fifth edition of the strength showcase saw a strong field of 23 Johannesburg, Durban, Matatiele and local powerhouses vie for top honours in the open and under 90kg categories.

Open Class competitors pushed each other to new heights in six events – deadlift, log lift (both one-rep maximum), ten 250kg tyre flips, farmer’s walk (with two 100kg cylinders over 40m), yoke walk (260kg over 20m) and the popular car pull (a Hilux double cab bakkie with people onboard over 20m – all timed events), all equally exciting.

Locals put up a strong fight, but it wasn’t enough to dethrone Westville-based Lourens. The Arnold Classic and African under 105kg strongman set two new South Coast Strongman records when he busted out a massive 350kg deadlift and a 150kg log lift.

He also recorded impressive times of 25.42, 14.7, 8.57 and 12.95 seconds in the tyre flip, farmer’s walk, yoke walk and car pull respectively.

“What a great day winning my third South Coast strongest man title with family and great friends and for my ouma’s birthday,” a pleased Lourens said.

“I’m super blessed to have these people in my life and my sponsors. Here is to many more good times, titles and fun comps. A 355kg deadlift seemed easy enough; I still got plenty in the tank one month till I defend my SA strongest man title.”

A personal best deadlift of 310kg saw former mixed martial arts fighter Ryan Preston from Margate secure second place, while Port Shepstone powerhouse Senzo Mbambo placed third.

Under 90kg competitors were challenged with the same events, however, they had to do 70kg log lift reps for 60 seconds and a car pull sans passengers.

Terrance Viviers from Matatiele was untouchable in this division, Stefan Coetzee took second place and Desmond Paton placed third.

Event organiser, Selvan Naidoo, said the competition continues to grow in stature.

“It was an awesome competition. The event has definitely grown over the years and guys from around the country are getting to know about the comp,” he told eHowzit.

“Thanks to referee Derrick Morris, timekeeper Danielle Nevett and scorekeeper Ilka Perfect for their help, and thanks to sponsors HiQ Port Shepstone, Multi Furniture, Eddie’s Auto, Highway Truck and Trailer, HDS, Midas, Amos Hardware, VHB Associates, Action Sports Bar, Royal Diaper Company, RA Brick ‘n Blocks, SCF Finger Prints and Superbodies Gym.”
