Two men, on the run from a security official who was hot on their heels, thought they could outrun him as they sped north on the R102 Old Main Road in a black VW Golf at about 14:00 on Wednesday, 10 January.
“The driver failed to manouvre the car around a curve just before the Mpambimyoni river bridge, collided with an Opel Astra and smacked into the concrete side of the bridge on the wrong side of the road before finally coming to a standstill straddling the concrete wall of the sidewalk,” Captain Vincent Pandarum said.
The Golf was a write-off with extensive front-end damages. It is alleged that the two occupants abandoned the car and ran off on foot but were intercepted by a policeman who was travelling in the opposite direction and the security official who was pursuing them. A 1.8 kilogram tin of Nan baby feed that had allegedly been stolen from Clicks store in the Scottburgh mall, was recovered from the vehicle. Both men were arrested and charged with reckless and negligent driving and theft.
Meanwhile, at about the same time, a 20-year-old woman, believed to be an accomplice of the two arrested men, was arrested by the security official at Clicks store in the mall and two tins of the Nan baby feed were recovered in her possession. She was charged with shoplifting and detained pending her first appearance in the Scottburgh Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 11 January with her two accomplices aged 31 and 24 years.
Both cases are being investigated by Constable Nkululeku Goodman Phakathi of the Scottburgh SAPS Detective Service.
