STATEMENT FROM PORT SHEPSTONE SAPS:
On 2014-06-28 at 02:00 a group of people were at the car park at a hotel in Scottburgh, when a man walked past and he allegedly interfered with them. He then walked to his car and came back to the group, armed with a hand gun and shot the one man in the group who later died on his way to hospital. Particulars of the car was checked and it was established that the car belongs to a police constable in Umzimkhulu. She was contacted by members from the Port Shepstone cluster task team and a meeting was arranged. After investigation it was found that the policewoman allegedly left her fire arm in the car and her boyfriend allegedly took the car to go to Umzinto. He then later allegedly brought the car and fire arm back, but she was never informed what happened. Capt Gert Bosman, Capt Zenele Khumalo, WO Yugen Moodley and Cst Possy Pillay later arrested Mfanafuthi Shozi (32) and he was charged with murder. He made a court appearance in Scottburgh on Monday 2014-06-30 and the case was remanded to 2014-07-09 for a bail application.
The policewoman faces charged of “Failing to safeguard a fire arm”. Investigations are continuing.
