KwaZulu-Natal Drag Racing hosted the first ever drag racing event at Dezzi Raceway in Oslo Beach on Saturday.
The event attracted over 3,000 visitors to the raceway and over 80 drivers from KwaZulu-Natal and Johannesburg.
“The results show many personal bests and a couple of top times ever recorded in KZN,” said event organiser Michelle Lewis.
Highlights on the day included the fastest quarter mile by Basil Pappageorge in his Nissan Skyline GT-R35, Alpha 12 at 09.197s.
The top speed recorded went to Antony Sivalingam in his Nissan Skyline GT-R35, Alpha 16, at 263.7 km/h, while female driver Simone Steyn (pictured below) broke her personal best in her Nissan Skyline GT-R35, Alpha 9 with Nitrous, at 09.587s.
Included in the line-up was a host of legendary drivers who had not raced for many years, including Sona Bikshu in his BMW 318i, 1800 turbo charged Nissan engine, who ran a 13.785s.
The fastest bike on the day went to Fiaz Mansur, at 09.275s and the top bike speed went to Coenraad Holl in his 1000cc BMW, at 250.2 km/h.
“The drivers who attended were very pleased and they are asking when the next event will take place. We had some learnings to take in to consideration, spectator wise, which we will work on and improve,” said Lewis.
Dezzi Raceway is the only permanent drag racing facility in the province.
The track is endorsed by Motorsport South Africa and boasts a quarter mile strip.
