South Coast schoolboy rugby players made their mark in the Under-12 and Under-13 Craven Week trials at Woodburn Stadium in Pietermaritzburg over the weekend.
Twenty-five talented local learners represented Southern KwaZulu-Natal in the trials, where Izotsha Primary’s Kane Plasket-Burn and Byron Winrow earned places in the Sharks Under-12 A and B teams respectively.
They were amongst nine South Coast players who showcased their skills in the Southern KwaZulu-Natal Under-12 A-team, the others being Callam Currin (Izotsha), Chaz Jong (Southcity), Greg Botha (Creston), Bruce Bormann (Izotsha), Nkazi Mpumlwana (Southcity), Joshua Janse van Rensburg (Port Edward) and Ulrich Potgieter (Izotsha).
They were coached by Izotsha Primary’s Tienie Viljoen, who thanked sponsors BMG and Build it Margate/Port Edward for supporting Southern KwaZulu-Natal rugby.
Nine locals featured in the Southern KwaZulu-Natal Under-13 A-team, namely Matthew Bircher (Port Edward), Stiaan Smith (Suid-Natal), Matthew Henderson (Creston), Qhama Nyathi (Southcity), Tristin Parsons (Suid-Natal), Arno Booyzen (Suid-Natal), Reece Murray (Izotsha), Lwazi Ngcobo (Izotsha) and Reece James du Toit (Izotsha).
Southcity’s Clive Pieterse was the head coach and Port Edward’s Ronaldo du Toit served as assistant coach of this side.
Seven locals played in the Southern KwaZulu-Natal Under-13 B-team, namely Rudi Durandt (Creston), Kyle Klein (Izotsha), Joshua Jordaan (Izotsha), Lihle Mhathu (Port Edward), Katleho Oliphant (Creston), Orrin van der Mescht (Southcity) and Xabiso Madikizela (Creston).
They were coached by Pennington Primary’s Joshua Marsden.
