The KwaZulu-Natal ladies coastals hockey team secured their second win of the South African Country Districts tournament when they beat Denbey’s Invitational 2-1 in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday.
The coastal ladies suffered their first setback when they ran into an impressive Western Province side on Monday.
It was a hard-fought match with the coastal ladies scoring first in the opening chukka through Fortunate Mnikathi, one of three Port Shepstone players in the team.
Western Province replied with their first goal and the score stayed 1-1 through evenly-contested second and third chukkas in which both sides missed opportunities.
Western Province went on to dominate the fourth chukka, scoring two goals and winning the match 3-1. Another Sheppie star was recognised as Kerry Herbert was named Player of the Match.
Day Three of the national tournament dawned with the coastal ladies positive and driven to win the match against Denbey’s Invitational.
The first chukka was even before the coastal side managed to score through Player of the Match Megan Campbell.
Denbey scored a quick goal to even the score, which seemingly fuelled the fire of the coastal outfit.
With fantastic passing skills and team work, Marilise Geringer scored the winning goal for KwaZulu-Natal in the last five minutes of the match.
