The rich history of the Spar Margate Week Bowls Tournament rolled on with great enjoyment last week.

Over 300 bowlers from across South Africa played in the 51st edition of the popular annual five-day tournament, which culminated at Margate Bowling Club on Friday.

Matches were also played at Margate Country Club, Riverside and Hibiscus Retirement Village and R54 000 in prize money was once again up for grabs, split evenly between the men and the ladies.

The winners of the men’s tournament were ‘The Underestimates’ from Hibberdene, consisting of Wayne van Nikkelen Kuyper, Riaan van der Berg, Denzil Massyn and Brian Pirrie.

The ladies tournament saw ‘Four of a Kind’ clinch the silverware for a second time. The team of Margate bowlers Ellen Cawker and Jessica Henderson and Bedford View members Colleen Piketh and Brenda Webb won their first title in 2015 and once again emerged as the leading ladies.

“It’s lovely to win again,” Cawker told eHowzit. “We’ve been friends for ages and really enjoy playing together. Colleen and Brenda come down every year and it’s always a fantastic tournament.”

A charity spider was held at each of the host clubs on Wednesday and raised over R6 000 for South Coast Hospice.

As always, there was plenty of entertainment to go along with the bowls. The stage show ‘Imagine’ on Tuesday was a big hit, and so too was Thursday’s auction and dinner.

A framed Joost van der Westhuizen collage valued at R15 000, a four-night, all-inclusive stay for two couples at the Nest valued at R12 000 and a three-night midweek stay for a couple at Umhlanga Sands valued at R7 000 were auctioned off, with local artist Winston Smile adding to the festivities.

Johnny Louch, a member of the organising committee, told eHowzit, “It was an absolutely fantastic week. The weather was kind to us and our greens were stunning. The show was incredibly well supported and the auction went very well.

“In terms of performance, we surpassed last year’s event and we created so much theater every day that when you left, it was always on a high. Everyone had a good time and next year, we hope to go even bigger.”

The tournament was sponsored by Spar, Dis-Chem, Santana Holiday Flats, Margate Panelbeaters, RE/MAX by the Sea, Hibiscus Retirement Village, Georgia Spur, Mug and Bean and Martin Electronics.
