NSRI Port Edward assists yacht after oil spill

STATEMENT BY NSRI PORT EDWARD DUTY CONTROLLER ALAN STILWELL:

At 10h00, Sunday, 15th April, NSRI Port Edward duty crew were placed on alert following reports from the yacht Chinook, with 2 male crew onboard, sailing from East London to Durban, reporting an oil leak, 40 nautical miles South of Port Edward.

Telkom Maritime Radio Services assisted with VHF marine radio communications.

At 14h00 they confirmed that they required oil following repairs that they had made and the NSRI Port Edward sea rescue craft Wild Coast Sun Rescuer rendezvoused with them off-shore North of Port St Johns.

Oil was provided and they confirmed that they were okay to continue.

Our sea rescue craft returned to base and ourselves, NSRI Shelly Beach, NSRI Rocky Bay and NSRI Durban are on alert while their progress is monitored and they are making good headway.
