During their May club meeting, the Port Shepstone Lions welcomed two new members to their ‘pride’.
Noel Pieterse, sponsored by Lion Marius du Plessis, and Jason Watt, sponsored by Lion President Denis Meyer, are a welcome addition as they are both young, vibrant and passionate about community service.
Their formal induction ceremony will take place during the club’s Presidential Induction Dinner in July.
The guest speaker at the meeting was Pastor Trevor Downham (pictured below), District 410-C’s Citizen of The Year for 2014 and founder of the Genesis Trust.
Downham spoke passionately about a new project that he is embarking on, The Safe Place, project. In a nutshell, the project aims to provide several safe places where women and children can seek refuge from the scourge of human trafficking which is rife in rural areas.
Each unit will be strategically situated at the entrance of a school and manned after hours by qualified security personnel. They will then refer the victims to social workers etc. for further action. The plan is to eventually roll out this project nationally.
The Port Shepstone Lions have approved the sponsorship of R45 000, which will cover the cost of one of the units. There is no limit to the amount of community service initiatives started by this fine individual and we are privileged to have the opportunity to participate in this most worthy project.
