South Coast’s Smith throws her name into Scottburgh MTB Race hat

As she pursues the overall title of the South Coast Fever MTB Series, South Coast-born Hayley Smith will be eyeing the top step of the podium at this Sunday’s 45km MTB Race at the Sappi Scottburgh MTB and Trail Weekend.

She is no stranger to the Scottburgh MTB Race having won the event twice, in 2013 and then again in 2014. She returned in 2017 where she finished as the runner-up and then bagged the bronze medal in 2018.

Born and raised on the South Coast, Smith has moved to Durban and works in Umhlanga as a sports massage therapist but knows that she will need a good result this weekend if she is to push for overall South Coast Series honours.

“I am only going to be able to do three of the four races in the series so there is a little more pressure on me,” the Bell Equipment rider said.

“I managed to win the Sardine MTB race in Port Edward earlier this month which was a good start but I will only be able to race this weekend and then race the Ingeli MTB race at the end of the month.

“There is a wedding that I have to attend over the weekend of the Lake Eland race so I need to get as many points as I can from the first three races.”

Smith has been in good form in 2019 and finished third with partner Desiree Verwey at the KAP sani2c, a race that finishes in Scottburgh. From a competition perspective Smith isn’t sure who will be on the start line but knows there will be a strong field of women.

“At the sani2c this year I think we touched some of the trails that we will be racing this year, but I haven’t spent a lot of time in the Scottburgh area being from Margate. With that said it should be another exciting race amongst the ladies.

“I am fairly sure that the South Coast ladies hoping to do well in the South Coast series will be there.

“Also those that are competing in the ROAG Series will also be there so I am expecting it to be a tough race,” she commented.

It has been a busy few weeks for the 24 year-old who is looking to peak at the right time with three races in the month of July.

“I decided that I would take it easy this week after a big block of training last week for Scottburgh.

“I am feeling good and I was ready to take some time off going into this weekend’s racing. I am hoping for a good race this weekend.”

Smith will be glad to know that two-time defending champion Bianca Haw has not committed to racing at the Sappi Scottburgh MTB Race this weekend.
