Ugu Mayor Mondli Chiliza announces Ugu Youth Awards

By Johan Pretorius

Ugu Mayor Mondli Chiliza announced the details of this year’s Ugu Youth Awards at a function at the St. Michael’s Hotel last week.  The awards will have the theme Celebrating Positive Minds which directly speaks to the main pillars of this initiative.    He pointed out the youth development programme was first incepted by the District Municipality in the year 2011 with the objective of promoting young talent, while recognizing excellence of young people in the district through their efforts of developing themselves and their communities.

Mayor Chiliza stated the 2017 Ugu District Youth Awards would be recognizing youth excellence in 10 categories identified and guided by the youth’s interests. Deserving young women and men between the ages of 18 to 35 would be rewarded for their tireless efforts to be successful in whatever they have ventured into.

The nomination process for these awards would be as transparent as possible as Ugu had appointed an independent selection team which would ensure transparency of all due process of selections. The communities would be given a chance to nominate deserving young people in their communities to compete in these awards. We therefore urge the Ugu communities to actively participate in the nomination process and nominate the excelling youth in their communities in these various categories.

Mayor Chiliza indicated the Awards Ceremony would be held during Youth Month on 10 June 2017, at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre.  “We saw it fitting that we celebrate youth achievements in a month solely dedicated to them which aims to instill consciousness among our youth on the fallen youth heroes and those who aspire to make a positive change in our communities.”

FULL SPEECH BY THE MAYOR OF UGU DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY CLLR M.A CHILIZA AT THE MEDIA LAUNCH OF THE UGU DISTRICT YOUTH AWARDS 2017.

 Good Morning, Sanibonani!

Ladies and gentlemen, it a great honour for me to stand before you this morning to officially launch the Ugu District Youth Awards an initiative which is geared towards youth development in our district.

We are launching here today the Ugu District Youth Awards under the theme, Celebrating Positive Minds which directs speaks to the main pillars of this initiative. This youth development programme was first incepted by the district municipality in the year 2011 with the objective of promoting young talent while recognizing excellence of our young people in the district through their efforts of developing themselves and their communities.

Program Director, we still stand by these outlined objectives and we remain resolute in recognising excellence in our youth whom are the future as we move our district forward. If I may borrow the words of one of the greatest revolutionary philosopher of all times, Sir Frantz Fanon who once said, “Each generation must discover its mission, fulfil it, or betray it, in relative opacity.”

Program Director, Youth Development forms an integral part of our district’s agenda and our country at large. And as municipalities we are investing a huge amount of resources in youth development programmes every year. We have funded numerous programmes which include youth-owned businesses, bursary assistance and youth athletes to name a few. It is therefore important to highlight that the onus is on us as a local sphere of government to ensure that we do everything possible to help our youth prosper.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the 2017 Ugu District Youth Awards will be recognizing youth excellence in 10 categories identified and guided by the youth’s interests. We will be awarding deserving young women and men between the ages of 18 to 35 for their tireless efforts to be successful in whatever they have ventured into. The identified categories are as follows:

  • Sports
  • Arts and Culture
  • Economic Development
  • Agriculture
  • Social Development
  • Ugu Tourism Ambassador
  • Education
  • People with disabilities in Education
  • Youth in Leadership (Premier’s Award)
  • Overall Winner of the Year

In these categories, we will be awarding the best performers in each local municipality with an exception of sports, arts and culture categories which will award male and female winners in each municipality.

The nomination process for these awards will be as transparent as possible as we have appointed an independent selection team which will ensure transparency of all due process of selections. Our communities will be given a chance to nominate deserving young people in their communities to compete in these awards. We therefore urge our communities actively participate in the nomination process and nominate the excelling youth in their communities in these various categories.

Programme Director, The Ugu District Awards Ceremony will be held during Youth Month on 10 June 2017, at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre. We saw it fitting that we celebrate youth achievements in a month solely dedicated to them which aims to instil consciousness among our youth on the fallen youth heroes and those who aspire to make a positive change in our communities. This year, marks 41 years after the Soweto Youth Uprising after brave young people sacrificed their lives for the freedom and democracy that the youth enjoys today. It is because of these brave young people that we have platforms such as the youth awards to help our youth become better people and soldiers of democracy.

In closing ladies and gentlemen, we would like to request for the support of the media in making this district event a success. We appeal to you to collaborate with us and positively profile this programme and create interest in both our rural and urban communities as we wish to attract young achievers in both our white and black communities.

I thank you…

Ugu District Municipality Mayor, Cllr MA Chiliza
