Ugu gets court interdict after illegal and unprotected strike, and to take steps against strikers

MEDIA STATEMENT BY UGU DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY:

The Municipality has noted with grave disdain the actions by a small group of employees under the union SAMWU who downed tools to engage in an illegal mass action on Thursday during working hours.

SAMWU and its members had failed to follow due processes laid out in the Labour Relations Act which regulate actions of this nature. And it must be stated that SAMWU together with its members are bound by the procedural agreements between the municipality and its recognised unions on how to conduct themselves in relations to strike action. The municipality was awarded with a court interdict which ordered SAMWU and its members to refrain from occupying municipal premises during the strike and to stop any acts of intimidation and lawlessness targeted at our non-striking workers. And this order was successfully executed as there were no reported incidences which impaired on our ability as the municipality to render our services in most areas.

We are in the process of instituting corrective measures against our workers who participated on the illegal and unprotected mass action. And as the municipality, we are always committed to a cordial relationship with our workers in maintaining a conducive working environment for all.

We do apologise for any inconvenience that might have been caused and wish to reassure our communities that we shall never be deterred in any way towards fulfilling our promise, that of delivering water and sanitation services.
