The South Coast Bass Association (SCBA) held its annual general meeting and prize-giving function at the Lobster Pot in Ramsgate recently.
SCBA members welcomed guest of honour Pem Reynecke from Pisces Predator and reflected on the year that was for the association, which dates back to 1988.
Awards were up for grabs for the anglers who accumulated the most number of points in the nine fish-offs on private dams over the course of the year.
Ferro van Greunen was the big winner as he scooped the heaviest bass award thanks to a fish of 2.98kg and the heaviest bag award after having racked up over 40 points for the 2015/2016 year.
Runner-up in the heaviest bass category was SCBA chairman Manus Erasmus with third place going to Van Greunen.
The second heaviest bag belonged to Boet Stewart and the third to Koos Bronkhorst.
On a lighter note, Stewart also ‘won’ the fool’s floating trophy for falling into the dam from his kick-boat.
“It was a good year with more fish being weighed than the previous year,” Erasmus told eHowzit.
“Farm dams are in good condition and we thank the farmers for the privilege to fish their dams. Water levels drop during the winter, but this is normally the time that we catch the big ones.
“Birds are also abundant with daily sightings of the large white-crested African fish eagle. We even had one take a bass while we were fishing.”
SCBA has had its up and downs in its 28 years of existence but the passion of its members keep it afloat.
“We are a small group of anglers and members come and go as it’s unfortunately not just about fishing. A lot of hard work goes into sustaining the South Coast Bass Association like fund raising, obtaining sponsorships and hosting the Port Edward Bass Classic annually.
“We’re happy to announce that the Port Edward Bass Classic will be hosted again next year. A big thank you to Outdoor 365 for their sponsorship and M Projects for the beautiful shirts and raincoats,” said Erasmus.
The SCBA committee were also re-elected with Erasmus being retained as chairman and Van Greunen as vice-chairman. Dalene Erasmus will serve as treasurer, Antony Card as events co-ordination and Koos Bronkhorst, Hennie Ferreira and Shawn Stewart as weigh masters.
