The defending champions managed to retain the Restoration Trophy after two days of entertaining golf at Port Shepstone Country Club on Sunday.

The Govender trio of Peppy, Pete Govender and Bob may have had a new teammate in Dr Ayoob Bux, who slotted in for Abel Yearanna, but the end result was the same as they eased to a second win in as many years.

Dominating the tournament, which dates back to 1959, they won Saturday’s betterball stableford and Sunday’s alliance to be crowned overall winners on 195 points.

Over 100 golfers from across the province participated in the tournament and with the defending champions separating themselves from the rest of the field on the scoreboard, the focus shifted to the battle for second place.

In the end, former Proteas cricket star Pat Symcox and his teammates Gary Vogt and Craig and Cilla Lindsay took the runners-up spot on 178 points with Piet Fourie, Johan Neethling, Jaco van der Waal and Herb de Beer third on 175 points.

A fundraising team led by Sandy Danckwerts called the Medical Base Camp Team added to the camaraderie as they ‘harassed’ the golfers to raise funds for the club.

Wednesday’s betterball stableford at the club, meanwhile, was won by Denis Schmidt and Jacky van Heerden (45 points) ahead of Jesse Verster and George Bowie (44 points).
