The district’s top bodyboarders will go head-to-head for regional honours at the Southern KwaZulu-Natal Bodyboarding Championships on Sunday.

The new year has brought with it an exciting shake-up within the Southern KwaZulu-Natal Bodyboarding Association (SKZNBA) with Maria Pistorius taking over the chairperson role from Rory Fellows-Smith and Wesley Coetzee coming in as vice-chairman.

“Wes and I’ve had a very successful 2015 working together on the Blowout Bodyboarding Club committee and I look forward to this challenge of heading up SKZNBA and working with the riders, to learn more about the sport, the ‘behind the scenes’ work that goes into making the sport a success and really taking the sport to a new level for our community and the riders,” Pistorius told eHowzit.

School exams and other factors meant the annual regional championships had to be postponed from its usual end-of-year date to this weekend, which Pistorius believes is an excellent opportunity to start the year and her tenure at the helm with a bang.

The top wave riders in the province are set to once again vie for Southern KwaZulu-Natal supremacy, however, Pistorius stressed the contest caters for riders of all skill levels across nine divisions, namely development, boys, juniors, men’s, ladies, pro, dropknee, masters and grand masters.

“We invite all riders to come and enjoy a day of fun and compete no matter your level of riding. This is the start to a big year ahead – with Southern KZN trials and training coming up, our Blowout contests and a whole lot more clinics,” said Pistorius.

All entrants are required to arrive and register at Lucien at 6.30am at a cost of R150 (R50 per additional division).

The contest venue will then be determined based on the swell, wind forecasts as well as respective beach conditions.

On top of being crowned Southern KwaZulu-Natal champions, winners will also walk away with top prizes.

“We have been so blessed with and awesome sponsor for cash prizes for the winners from Marilla Surf and Louis from Ocean Sport who’s going to hook us up with some product prizes,” said Pistorius, adding, “Thanks also to eHowzit who always goes above and beyond to help us get the word out there.”

Prospective sponsors for SKZNBA development programmes and contests scheduled throughout the year can contact Pistorius on 072 934 6463 or mariap@impiafrica.co.za or Coetzee on 072 073 1533.
