STATEMENT BY LOWER SOUTH COAST SPCA:
The past two weeks, Dirkie the seal has been up and down between Uvongo and Southbroom beach.
His condition is stable but he is definitely underweight and very far away from home.
The LSC SPCA, uShaka Sea World, KZN Wildlife and Wolf Security have been monitoring Dirkie, sending photographs and videos through to a group of marine life experts.
At the moment, he is still active and is often seen lying on the rocks. We ask the community to be on the lookout for Dirkie.
If you see him, please take photos, and send it to the SPCA on 083 222 6354 as well as a pindrop.
Stay 20m clear of the seal and ask the public not to go close and keep your voice low.
If he is in an area that it will be easy to capture him to go for treatment, if the experts deem so, it will be done under the strict guidance of the officials involved.
Please do not approach him and do not chase him in the water.
He normally rests on the rocks from 9am to 2pm.
To the walkers who loves the Ramsgate Rambler, please be on the lookout for Dirkie.
We will keep you updated on any further developments.
Thank you to everyone who has assisted and monitored the seal.
