Quintin van Jaarsveld
The official third annual Burry Stander Memorial Ride/Walk will take place at the Burry Stander Bike Park in Umtentweni on Sunday at 7am.
Hundreds of cyclists are expected to join the Stander family to commemorate the life of the late Olympic mountain biker, who died in an accident involving a taxi on January 3, 2013 at the age of 25.
Cyclists and walkers will set off for approximately 7km down to the start of the ‘Mushroom’ ride where they’ll be provided with a stone, before they make a 7km climb to the top of the hill.
A refreshment station at the halfway stage will see participants enjoy Stander’s favourite drink, chocolate milk, before they continue their trek to the top, where each will place their rock in memory of the South African sporting icon.
Coffee, tea, soft drinks and boerewors rolls will be on sale at the Burry Stander Coffee Shop.
A day permit costs R50 while annual permits are available at R100.
All funds will go towards the Burry Stander Foundation, which honours Stander’s legacy and promotes cycling and road safety.
Memorial rides are set to take place across the globe on Sunday as part of the #iRide4Burry campaign.
Stander’s wife Cherise will lead one of these rides at Cape Town stadium (formerly Green Point stadium).
