Burry Stander’s ghost bike has been stolen.
The bike served as a tribute to the multi-time South African champion at the scene of his fatal accident on the corner of Stott Street and the R102 in Shelly Beach.
The bike – Stander’s back-up bike for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he finished 15th – was stolen chain and all, presumably on Tuesday. A photo collage was also stolen.
“I am completely numb…who would do something like this? The bike has been there for seven years and eight months and now it’s gone,” said a devastated Mandie Stander, mother of the late mountain biking great.
“I’ve been to every scrapyard in the hope that whoever took it sold it for ‘scrap’. It’s Burry’s birthday on the 16th and I’d like nothing more than to get his bike back.”
Stander passed away at the age of 25 when he collided with a taxi making an illegal turn during a training ride on January 3, 2013.
Anyone with information about the stolen bike is urged to contact Mandie at 079 493 7499.
