The long-awaited resumption of an air service between Margate airport and Oliver Tambo International happened late on Friday afternoon with the landing of the inaugural Cemair flight at Margate airport………a fully booked flight which returned to Oliver Tambo later on Friday evening……also fully booked.

A group of local government officials, politicians, specially invited guests and Cemair personnel was visibly excited and some even emotional when the Beech 1900 CD Turboprop first circled the dark blue cloudy skies, made a wide turn over the sea and came back to land amid enthusiastic applause.   As is customary with inaugural flights, the aircraft was sprayed with water and the inaugural flight symbolically “christened” . The flight was met on the tarmac by a group of people, which included HCM Mayor Cynthia Mqwebu, who wasted no time to acquaint herself with the controls next to Captain Gerhard Vorster who, together with First Officer Allan Fee, were at the controls from Johannesburg.

At a function after the landing, welcoming messages were given by representatives of different organisations, politicians and local government departments…….and they were unanimous that it was an historical occasion, which would benefit the Ugu region and neighbouring areas tremendously. Every speaker emphasised the positive and economic impact the new service would have on the region.

eHowz!t has established that by the end of the week, way over 400 tickets had already been sold, and that they were selling at a steady rate per day. Cemair CEO Miles van der Molen was over the moon, and said the ticket sales had exceeded all expectations.

eHowz!t’s reporting team was there, and has compiled this report of the landing of the flight……we are processing a more comprehensive sights and sounds video reportage of the occasion, which was characterised by an extraordinary upbeat vibe.  It will be posted as soon as it has been processed……….
