Comrades Marathon multi-gold medalist Prodigal Khumalo, along with local runners, took part in a fundraising charity run for South Coast Hospice, which was hosted by local organisation Improve Performance Academy in Uvongo recently.

Some R2 410 was raised for hospice.

“The fundraiser was in celebration of Youth Month through sport. It was well received by the athletes and to a larger extent the South Coast community,” said organiser Vukile Shabane.

Some 54 athletes took part – while some ran, others cycled in the 15km and 30km events.

“This was truly a fundraising run for a good cause as Prodigal was blown away by the turnout. He personally aims to run for a purpose and he emotionally disclosed that these runs are close to his heart,” added Vukile.

Other running clubs that participated were Ugu Athletics and South Coast Striders.

“Sport has the power to change our surroundings. It can also uplift the current socio-economic state of young people and our country at large,” said Vukile.

He added this was possible through collaboration and when all worked together for a common goal.

He thanked various sponsors who made the fundraiser a success. “Sport sponsorship is essential to address societal issues and we appeal to individuals and businesses to come on board with us on these initiatives which has a positive impact on our communities.
