Blue Ocean Aquatics Swim Club underlined their strength at the KwaZulu-Natal Level One Championships at Kings Park swimming pool.
Despite taking part with only seven swimmers, the club placed 11th out of 24 clubs and came home with four gold medals, four silver medals and four bronze medals.
The highlight of the recent meet was the club winning the girls’ 11-12 year 200m freestyle relay. The swimmers not only won medals but made huge improvements on their times. With that came more qualifying times to be able to attend the regionals in Bloemfontein.
Carla Kretzschmar won gold in the 50m breaststroke and silver in the 200m backstroke event. Tamara Venter improved her times by 100.38 seconds; just in her 400m freestyle alone she dropped 38.09 seconds and won a silver medal in this event.
Marzelle de Beer won bronze in both the 100m breaststroke and 200m freestyle and had an overall improvement of 15.18 seconds. Skye Schlebusch was the fastest seeded 11-year-old for the 50m butterfly event and won the gold medal by improving on her time by 1.58 seconds.
Kayla Heydricks secured herself medals in the 100m backstroke (silver) and 50m backstroke (bronze). She was also able to improve her times by an outstanding 31.57 seconds.
Rudi Steyn won a gold medal by swimming against his brother, who pushed him to a winning time of 1.13.73. He also won a silver medal in the 200m freestyle and a bronze medal in the 100m butterfly.
