The Port Shepstone men’s and ladies hockey teams were made to play catch up against Rovers and Gongs respectively at the weekend.
The men had a hard game against Rovers and found themselves trailing 5-3 at half-time, Sheppie’s goals being scored by substitute players from Gongs Hockey Club.
Sheppie showed improvement in the second half, holding the ball better, which saw Gareth Bishop score with a great drag flick.
Rovers, however, went on to win 6-4.
Ladies lack finishing touch
The Port Shepstone ladies team took on Gongs for the second weekend in a row after a bad loss last week due to not having a goalkeeper.
Gongs scored first from a field goal with a strike from the top of the circle.
They added a second from a field goal when a rebound from the keeper’s pad snuck into the left upright to give them a 2-0 half-time lead.
Sheppie held off attacks for the first 10 minutes in the start of the second half before going on the attack themselves.
They played some beautiful hockey but the ball did not find the back of the net.
Instead, it was Gongs who scored a final goal to seal a 3-0 win.
Player of the Match honours went to Rix Durrheim and Tanya Hielckert.
The club’s year-end dinner will be held at Shelly Beach Ski-Boat Club on 27 September at 6pm.
The cost is R100 per person, to be paid to Kelly before 15 September.
Port Shepstone’s men’s and women’s teams train every Tuesday and Thursday from 5.30pm to 7pm at Creston College.
