Santhos Baskali has been named the new men’s golf captain at Port Shepstone Country Club.

Santhos was a founding member of Pro-Vision Golf and Social Club and served as chairman in its first five years of existence. At present, he is the secretary, a role he’s filled for the past seven years.

He has been a member of Port Shepstone Country Club for the past ten years and has served on the golf committee for the past three years. He retired in September 2016 from the Education Department after almost 40 years’ service.

“I am a committed club member who will work towards continuing to make the club the friendly family-orientated sporting hub it presently is for all the lovely people of the South Coast,” said Santhos.

Santhos started playing golf at the age of 13 at Durban Golf Course, which he said was a nine hole “Indian” golf course that was situated near where the present Makro is in Springfield Park in Durban.

His most memorable golfing experiences include playing against and beating the late great Papwa Sewgolam in a semi-final matchplay as a 15-year-old (albeit off a 18 handicap), and watching Papwa and Gary Player playing together over 18 holes in the third round of the SA Open played at Durban Country Club.
