Comrades ecstasy and milestones for South Coast Striders

South Coast Striders experienced ecstasy and agony in the Comrades Marathon down run on Sunday.

A total of 43 Striders and some 18 500 athletes from across the world tackled the 93rd edition of the Ultimate Human Race, which at 90.184km, was longer than previous years and thus a particularly taxing trek from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

Thirty-four members of the Uvongo-based Striders finished the iconic race, while nine had to withdraw due to injuries.

The club’s top male runner was Mavela Nyembezi with a smashing time of 07:25 and their leading ladies runner was Zandile Dunywa, who crossed the finish line at Moses Mabhida Stadium in 09:32.

Nyembezi secured the Striders’ sole silver, with Brother Moyo missing out on this prestigious medal by a mere 43 seconds.

Four athletes achieved magical milestones – Donnovan Mulder earned his Double Green number after completing his 20th Comrades, while Cows campaigner Deborah Berridge, Eric Mqadi and Arthur Flascas all joined the Green Number Club after completing their 10th Comrades.

It was also a special day for novices Frances Simamane, Graeme Milligan, Bongani Mbhele and Johannes Ungerer, who conquered their maiden Comrades.

“I’m extremely proud of the members. Everyone gave it their all and it was apparent how much training we had put in,” Striders running captain Mark Smith told eHowzit.

Unfortunately for Smith, he had to throw in the towel at 82km due to severe cramping. The true club man said, “Some will ask me if I’m feeling very disappointed, but the joy of seeing so many of my fellow runners doing so well far outweighs that feeling.

“For those that have never run a Comrades, it’ll be hard to understand just how difficult the down run is. The first half has a fair share of uphills and then when your legs are tired, you have to contend with the very steep Field Hill.

“The pain that runners experience in their quads is terrible. This is where most runners experience cramping, but having said that, the support from the crowds and the water tables is unbelievable. People of all race, gender and age come to support the runners and urge them on to reach that finish line. It’s amazing!

“I’d like to thank the awesome seconders from the South Coast Striders that stood on the road for us on Sunday – Kim Jones, Emmanuel Mufamadi, Andrew Spence and Marcel Luther.

“Without them, so many runners wouldn’t have made it. I’d also like to thank the family and friends that supported our runners.

“Now it’s time to rest. We have been training for five months and I’m sure the members will enjoy the break.”
