Creston College’s title defence ended in penalty shootout heartbreak against Kokstad College in an enthralling final of the Southern Regionals of the SPAR KZN Regional Hockey Tournament.
Earlier on Saturday, the two teams clashed in the last of the pool games where the result was a thrilling 0-0 draw. Both teams attacked their opposition’s goals but were unable to score.
At full time, the score in the decider – pitting the defending champions Creston against 2011 winners Kokstad – was 0-0, the fate of the regional thus to be decided in a penalty shootout, in which 10 young ladies lined up to face their opposing goalie with a mere eight seconds to find the back of the net.
On the first two attempts, both goalies over-enthusiastically knocked over the penalty taker, resulting in a penalty stroke for each team. Creston didn’t manage to convert theirs but Kokstad secured one point.
The remaining players all attempted to score, but Kokstad’s goalie, Amephi Gqoboka, played out of her socks, pouncing on all of Creston’s attempts and smothering all of them. The final score was 2-0 after four attempts each.
Creston topped their pool with 10 points and one point separated Kokstad from them, leaving them in second. Lying in third was Suid-Natal, both Bergview and Ixopo were level on one point each with Bergview claiming fourth as they had won the pool game, fifth was Ixopo.
In Pool B, host school King Edward High School were in first place. Southcity and Port Shepstone were level on five points but Southcity came second having won the pool game between the two and Port Shepstone were third, fourth was St Patrick’s College and fifth were newcomers St Monica’s.
After the pool games were concluded, all the teams played in cross-pool play-offs. The games were 20 minutes one way with the play-offs and final being won on penalty shootouts if the games were a draw.
The Most Promising Umpire award went to Donovan Rothman from Southcity Christian College. This award qualifies him to umpire at the Finals in July.
