Fitness athletes took things to the next level at CrossFit Wild Coast’s Summer Slam on Saturday.
Eighty competitors descended on the Manaba-based box to put their power, agility, flexibility, speed, cardiovascular endurance and mental strength to the test in front of hundreds of supporters.
Competitors also had to complement each other as it was a same-sex pairs competition.
The events were one-rep max snatch, nine-minute amrap (as many rounds as possible), 14KB snatches (24/16kg), 35 double unders (skipping), 11-minute amrap, thrusters and burpee box jump overs.
After much excitement and some stellar showings, Paul and Piet beat fellow CrossFit Richards Bay athletes Mike and JP Richards Bay to the men’s title, with Darryn and Kyle from CrossFit Fetish finishing third.
Emma and Bubbles from CrossFit Fetish emerged victorious in the highly competitive and entertaining ladies competition. Lindsay and Karin from CrossFit Richards Bay were the runners-up, with Kristy and Steph from CrossFit DBN West placing third.
“The event was absolutely unreal,” CrossFit Wild Coast coach and owner Mitch Anderson told eHowzit.
Mitchell said athletes raised the bar considerably compared to last year’s event.
“The guys and girls competed their socks off. Many people got personal bests on their one-rep max attempt at the snatch.
“The highlight of the day, though, was to see how big the Crossfit community in KZN has become…everyone supporting each other and getting behind guys from other boxes. It was really amazing to witness how supportive everyone was.”
He added: “Thanks to USN, who was our main sponsors, and Physio and Wellness. USN gave out tons of protein and energy drinks and Physio and Wellness gave the winners some awesome Tens machine, which helps with muscle recovery.
“Thanks also to Insure Brokers in Southbroom, who made much of this event possible, Southbroom Painters, who made our box look super awesome, Young’s Pharmacy and BoxChamp for the goods.”
