The KwaZulu-Natal men’s coastals hockey team’s South African Country Districts campaign ended on a whimper in Limpopo on Saturday.
The team, filled with Port Shepstone Hockey Club players, ran out of puff after a demanding week and suffered a 5-1 defeat to Northern Blues in the fifth-sixth place play-off.
KwaZulu-Natal created a number of chances early on but couldn’t convert.
Greg Wigmore scored a fantastic goal set up by Sheppie teammate Warren van der Merwe but the lone goal wasn’t good enough to overcome a hungry Northern Blues side.
It was a stronger campaign than what the sixth-place finish suggests with KwaZulu-Natal winning four of their seven games, losing two and drawing one.
