KZN COGTA MEC SIPHO HLOMUKA PLACES DISASTER MANAGEMENT TEAMS ON ALERT AS HEAVY RAINS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS THE PROVINCE

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Sipho Hlomuka has placed Disaster Management teams on high alert following a weather warning that was issued by the South African Weather Service, which indicates that severe thunderstorms are expected to hit large parts of the province from Monday afternoon until Wednesday.

Cold-temperatures with snowfall (5 to 10 cm) are expected in the Drakensberg mountains from Monday afternoon.

Cogta MEC Sipho Hlomuka has placed Disaster Management teams on high alert as the inclement weather conditions are expected to bring heavy downpours which might lead to localised flooding, strong damaging winds and large amounts of small hail.

Hlomuka has warned residents in the Ugu, Harry Gwala, uMgungundlovu, uThukela, uMzinyathi, Amajuba Districts and the eThekwini Metro, to take the necessary precautions as the expected weather conditions pose a flooding risk to low lying areas.

“We are appealing to all residents especially those that are part of essential services and might be using our roads tomorrow to exercise extreme caution. Our teams will be monitoring a number of areas that are prone to weather-related incidents such as flooding so that they can respond quicker,” said Hlomuka.
