South Coast bodybuilders commanded the spotlight in the SSN Team Universe Show held at the Opera Theatre in Durban on Saturday.
The event was a great showcase of South African bodybuilding talent as the country’s best bodies vied for bodybuilding, body fitness and bikini titles as well as their share of the over R100 000 in cash and prizes up for the taking.
The South Coast contingent ranged from experienced competitors to debutants, all of whom had solid showings after weeks of rigorous training and dieting.
Tyronne du Toit was the standout local competitor as the Superbodies Port Shepstone powerhouse flexed his way to the Juniors Under-23 title.
“Words cannot describe the feeling that came over me once I was announced the winner of my category. It’s only something you can experience and not explain,” Du Toit told eHowzit.
“It was a feeling of relief…that all my hard work and time that I put in had finally paid off. It was truly an experience I’ll never forget.”
Michael Wood, one of seven athletes representing Superbodies Margate, joined Du Toit in the Juniors Under-23 ranks and was rewarded for his efforts with a bronze medal.
Highly decorated Jared Read managed a fifth place in the Under 90kg division and Ninine Grove capped a promising debut with a top 10 placing in the Beach Bikini competition, while Bertus Venter (physique), Stian Vermaak (physique), Vicky Bance (Under 80kg) and Vanessa Cook (Bikini Fitness) gained valuable experience.
