Mass funeral for the Sunwich Port accident victims

KZN Department of Transport, Ugu District Municipality, Umzumbe Local Municipality and Road Accident Fund will give support for the burial of the 5 people who passed on at the fatal Sunwich Port accident. The accident occurred on the 7th April 2017 near Anerley. The taxi was carrying people mostly from Mgangeni area in ward 18 and 20 of Umzumbe Municipality.

Government led by Umzumbe Municipality Mayor Cllr Sizwe Ngcobo has visited all these families and they have agreed to have a mass funeral wherein the costs will be borne by government. “In our discussions with the families we agreed to have a mass funeral of all 5 people at Nkanini Sports Ground on Sunday 16 April 2017,” said Trevor Khanyile. “Government will carry all the basic costs related to the funeral.”  All the people are practically neighbors in the area of Mgangeni which makes it easy for the funeral to be held in the local sports ground. After the service, the funerals will be held at their respective homes.

The deceased are Simphiwe Nxumalo (18), Bhekani Sengane (36), Lindiwe Sikhosana (51), Manozi Chili (42) and Nkosinathi Shibe (35). Preparations are continuing to ensure a dignified funeral service. Families have welcomed the support and said that it gives them comfort in this time of grief.
