The South Coast Striders are calling all athletes and walkers to participate in the 2018 Hibiscus Challenge ultra-marathon and additional races on 1 May.

Sponsored by Ray Nkonyeni Municipality and various local sponsors, this Comrades Qualifier is in its fourth year and still growing strong, having drawn more than 750 entries in 2017. The time limit for the ultra-marathon is 7 hours, however, 6 hours will be needed to qualify for the Comrades.

All entrants who complete the 48km, 21km and 10km will receive medals and all pre-entries up to 16 April 2018, will receive T-shirts. Prize money totaling over R49,000 and R10,000 worth of lucky draw prizes are up for grabs on the day. Ultra-marathon runners must be 20 years or older, 21km runners must be a minimum age of 16 years and 10km runners 14 years of age on the day of the race.

Entries are open and can be found online on the South Coast Striders’ website and Facebook page, as well as at various points around the KZN South Coast. Online entries will continue to be taken up to 25 April 2018 and late entrants can register the day before the race at Shelly Centre 10am-12noon and at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre 2-5pm. On race day, entries will be allowed between 4.30-5.30am. Make sure you note the conditions as set out on the entry form as the event is run in accordance with the rules of the IAAF, Athletics South Africa and KwaZulu-Natal Athletics.

Prizegiving will take place at 10.30am for the 21km and 10km events and at 12.15 for the 48km.

The route map is available on the South Coast Striders’ website and Facebook page, with start and finish at the Ugu Sport and Leisure Centre.

The route takes runners and walkers on a journey through the scenic KZN South Coast exploring rural backroads, farmlands, along the beachfront with great sea views for inspiration and up a few challenging hills to keep things interesting.
