St Mike’s now Uvongo’s high crime area, and other crime, municipal news items

*  Ugu District Municipal Manager DD Naidoo has assured the people of the municipality that the municipality is fully aware of the reality of its financial challenges and is going flat out to improve the 2014/3015 audit report. He pointed out the extent of Ugu’s financial challenges were pointed out in the Auditor General’s report for 2012/2013, and previous reports were analysed to fully understand what had to be done.  Mayor Ntombifikile Gumede stressed that the municipality had implemented cost saving measures such as less overtime and function catering. *  Commercial  Road in Umtentweni was officially opened by HCM Mayor Cynthia Mqwebu this week.   She reminded ratepayers that the HCM had promised to repair the road at a meeting between residents and the municipality.   The road has been rehabilitated from Rethman Drive to the intersection with the R61, and the repairs over a distance of 1.4 kilometres, cost R4.2 million. * The South Coast Herald reports the St. Michael’s Sands area has become Uvongo’s latest crime hot spot.  Uvongo Community Safety Forum Ernest Booysen says housebreaking statistics have recently spiked in Orange Rocks Road, Crown Road, Bay Road, Ridge Road and Fleet Road.  Residents in Ridge Road and Fleet Street are now setting up a Block Watch for the area.  He appealed to homeowners to keep a lookout for suspicious behaviour. * A man who went to the bank to cash a cheque, was kidnapped in the Port Shepstone CBD on Thursday last week and apparently injected with a drug.   The 44-year-old man was reported as missing by his employer after he did not return and answer his cell phone.  Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said the police began searching for the missing man, and he was found later by Sergeant Carel Beetge of the Southport Police Station.  “He appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance. Police have reason to suspect he was followed out of the bank and robbed.”
