Over 20 teams vied for pole position at this year’s CANSA Relay For Life event held at Dezzi Raceway at the weekend.

What the teams lacked in numbers they made up for in value as the net income from this year’s event exceeded R100 000, half of which was raised by one team, “Hope on the Move”.

The flag was raised at 4pm on Saturday and was heralded by a sudden south westerly squall, which chose this time to make landfall, sending gazebos and inflatable kids toys tumbling along the track.

The gust of wind was short lived, however, and the serious business of burning some rubber started as relayers embarked on their 12-hour relay to raise awareness of and remember those people whose lives have been touched by cancer in one way or another.

Guiding the participants were Luminaria bags which lined the track. These bags were lovingly adorned by participants who wished to remember loved ones who succumbed to the disease.

Teams arranged tents and gazebos along the track and these provided welcome relief to weary relayers who needed a pit stop to catch their breath, refuel or take a break.

Des and Louis Gutzeit pulled out all the stops to ensure that the venue was not only in pristine condition but spared nothing to make sure that there was sufficient lighting and clean amenities.

Shane Gutzeit led the survivors around the track in one of the drifting vehicles for the first lap, adding some adrenaline to the opening ceremony.

Wolf Security ensured that participants were safe from danger. Not only did Wolf post a permanent armed reaction vehicle on site, there were roaming guards patrolling the parking lot and interspersed with the crowd to ensure that the event was not marred by crime.

Wolf also supplied a security camera which Venture-Net made use of to provide live streaming of the event to those who were not able to be there for the event.
