Workers’ Day was spiced up as Port Shepstone Hockey Club hosted their first senior primary hockey tournament at Creston College.

The Powerade Port Shepstone Hockey Club Senior Primary Tournament was a great success, with 128 Under-11 and Under-13 boys and girls and 21 teams, mostly from Creston College, Izotsha Primary School and Southcity Christian College, competing in the inaugural competition.

The tournament boasted plenty of prizes and was played on a reduced size field of 25 metres, which made for great entertainment for parents and spectators.

Amid a festival atmosphere, the Hot Shots captained by Ross Klusener and Flick Chix captained by Tiffany Rawlins were crowned the winners of the Under-13 boys and girls divisions respectively.

Zundaburgs captained by Stryda Perry won the Under-11 boys division while Surf Queens captained by Kelly won the Under-11 girls division.

Port Shepstone Hockey Club secretary Lana Rhodes told eHowz!t: “We’re thrilled with how well the tournament was supported and that it was so successful.

“The players had loads of fun and everyone enjoyed the good vibe created by main sponsor Powerade. We would like to thank them and the other sponsors for their generous sponsorship.”

Rhodes explained that, “The Port Shepstone Hockey Club committee were planning on holding another business tournament, but we felt it was more important to focus on the children during hockey season and would run a business tournament later in the year.”

The club were unanimously praised for the decision, as well as for hosting a well-run tournament, and Rhodes said due to the success of the inaugural tournament, they plan to run another tournament in the near future.

The tournament sponsors were Powerade, Georgia Spur, Panarottis Shelly Centre, Ice Rink Galleria, Malik, Sportsmans Warehouse Pietermaritzburg, 2 the Tee marketing and promotional wear and John Dory’s Shelly Centre.

Port Shepstone Hockey Club’s men’s and women’s teams train every Tuesday and Thursday from 5.30pm to 7pm at Creston College. Anyone interested in joining them can contact Rhodes on 083 497 5787 or lana745@gmail.com
