KwaZulu-Natal drag racers claimed bragging rights over RACESA at Dezzi South Coast Raceway on Saturday.

In excess of 75 of the fastest street cars in the country touched down at the picturesque Oslo Beach track ready to represent.

In one corner was KwaZulu-Natal’s elite, assembled by KZN Drag Racing and Gas Magazine. In the other was the RACESA crew, consisting of racers from the Western Cape, Port Elizabeth, East London and Pretoria.

The action got under way with shake-down passes, in which racers ran for times to determine their placings and classes for the heads up shootout after lunch.

KwaZulu-Natal’s Tariq Dada clocked the top speed of the day – 245km/h – in his 10.12-second run in his GTR 35.

KwaZulu-Natal went on to dominate in front of their home crowd, winning the shootout 7-1.

RACESA were classy in defeat, owner Nazeer Loonat commenting, “We will take it on the chin, until round two. Congrats to all who participated and a special thanks to all who assisted in making this event happen.

“Thank you KZN Drag Racing and Dezzi Raceway for hosting us and for the crazy times and amazing hospitality. I have big shoes to fill for round two.”

RACESA do have some positives to take from their defeat going into the rematch.

Most notably, they boasted the five fastest times of the day, topped by Shaheen Barmania, who put together a 9.24-second run at 239.7km/h in his Lumina UTE.

They’ll undoubtedly look to convert these times into winning runs when it matters when they get a second crack at their KwaZulu-Natal counterparts. The date and venue for the rematch will be announced in due course.

Before then, though, KwaZulu-Natal will go head-to-head with Gauteng’s 011 Street Society for South African drag racing supremacy at Dezzi South Coast Raceway on 21 April.
