Fresh off another adrenaline-pumping Africa Bike Week, Margate shifts its attention to bowls this week.
The 48th annual Margate Week Bowls Tournament starts today (Monday) and sees bowlers from all corners of the country compete for their share of the prize money, which this year exceeds R23 000.
More important than the prize money for the bowlers are the coveted overall titles. Men vie for the Eddie Delve Shield while women play for the Alf Wilcox trophy. The overall winners also receive R1200 each.
The tournament, which concludes on Friday, is being played at Margate Bowling Club and Riverside (formerly Uvongo), with more match possibly played at the Village depending on the number of entries.
The format sees bowlers compete in eight fours games of 21 ends each. A point is earned for each end won and four points are awarded to the team with the highest score.
