As anticipated, a new set of men’s and women’s champions were crowned in the 2014 club championships at Margate Country Club on Sunday.
The course on Saturday was set up very long with tees at the tips of the tee box which, coupled with the heat and strong wind, made conditions very tough on Day One.
On Sunday, the tees were set up to accommodate all golfers and although there was no wind to speak of, the going was not easy as conditions remained very hot.
Robert Mavundla was the man who dethroned the legendary Ivan Curlewis.
The 34-time champion was out of action for a number of months following shoulder surgery yet still managed to finish third on a count out – a testament to his class.
Mavundla clinched his first men’s club title rather comfortably on 150 gross, with runner-up Franscois Botha six points adrift.
“I’m extremely happy,” Mavundla told eHowz!t.
“Saturday was difficult but luckily Sunday was easier because I was playing with very experienced players.
“I was happy with my driving and my wedges but I had some problems with my putting.
“Overall, though, I’m happy with how I played.”
A new women’s champion was guaranteed in the absence of 2013 winner Tammy Wessels, who has relocated to Durban, and it was multi-time bridesmaid and last year’s runner-up Barbara Jackson who went one better this year and clinched the silverware on 187 gross ahead of Maureen Ogilvie (191 gross).
“Club champs is a different ball game; it’s a mental thing, so I’m very happy and a bit relieved to have won. It was hard work and the competition was stiff, especially on the first day,” said Jackson.
“I’ve won other divisions before but never the actual club champs, so it’s quite special. I thought I didn’t play well and the pressure was on but fortunately I did just enough,” she added.
Brian Jolliffe (163 gross) and David Jenkinson (72 points) won the Men’s B and C divisions while Hilary Hendry (191 gross) and Kay Young (204 gross) won the women’s bronze and copper divisions respectively.
Margate Country Club manager Dereck Hirson commented: “The camaraderie was very good and the standard of golf very high. Although Robert was a clear winner, he had some very good competition.
“Overall, it was a good weekend with the course in excellent condition and good spirit amongst the players.”
