Newly-built Port Shepstone Maritime Museum is operational, contrary to media reports

The Ray Nkonyeni Municipality would like to dispel the media claims that were published towards the end of July saying the newly built state of the art, Port Shepstone Maritime Museum is not operational and referring to it as a white elephant. These untruthful claims which were unfairly attributed to the Municipal Manager are unfounded as there is an agreement between the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality and the KZN Department of Arts and Culture to have the museum operational.

This Port Shepstone Maritime Museum, of which RNM Council recently unanimously resolved to name after the struggle stalwart, Mama Winnie Nomzamo Madikizela-Mandela started to be operational since February 2018.  This came after an agreement between KZN Department of Arts and Culture and Ray Nkonyeni Municipality that even though it has not been officially opened but it can be used as a need for it could not be ignored.

It is very unfortunate that this incorrect information was even attributed to someone who initiated that an agreement for it to be operational even though it has not been officially opened be agreed upon by the two institutions of government. The KZN Department of Arts and Culture, through MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Ms Bongi Sithole-Moloi appreciatively agreed to have the museum operational whilst plans to have it officially opened were in progress. Both RNM and the KZN Department of Arts and Culture denounce in its strongest terms these indecorous claims which smeared the current government as being wasteful, imprudent and short-sighted and call upon the concerned media house to retract the report.

As the Museum is functional, members of the public are welcomed to visit this state of the art museum which is located in the Port Shepstone Beach Front during weekdays between 08h00 and 16h00 and on Saturdays between 08h00 and 13h00.
