Exclusive: HCM explains new parking meter system

As eHowz!t South Coast reported on Tuesday, a high tech parking meter system is to be installed in CBD areas from Port Edward to Hibberdene in the very near future.  Mayor Cynthia Mqwebu announced the new system at a media briefing in the Council Chambers, and said it would be a state of the art system boasting technology from Europe, assembled in South Africa.  The system would allow various payment options, including smart card and pay-by-phone for those who were registered users.  Motorists would be required to pay for parking between the hours of 8 am to 5 pm weekdays, and 8 am to 2 pm on weekends.  Phase one of the system would see parking meters installed in the Port Shepstone CBD. Phase Two would involve Margate and Port Edward, and St. Michael’s Beach, Shelly Beach, Hibberdene and Marburg would follow in the last phase.

During the briefing Municipal Manager Max Mbili and Senior Manager: Mayoralty and Communications, Simon Soboyisa fielded questions on the viability and effectiveness of the  new system….
