Blue Ocean Aquatics swimmers off to fast season

Blue Ocean Aquatics swimmers got the new competitive season off to a great start at the annual Beavers gala in Durban recently.

Eleven of the club’s swimmers were in action and came home with 12 medals – two gold, four silver and six bronze.

This was the first club long-course gala for Nelzaan Strydom, Tayne Rudling and Keytin Vorster and they faired extremely well and clocked great times.

Mbali Burnett swam a level one qualifying time in the 100m backstroke, with Carla Kretzschmar taking 28.79 seconds off her 400m freestyle time.

Emma Kuhn won two gold medals in the 50m and 100m breaststroke as well as four bronze medals in the 50m backstroke, 50m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 50m butterfly in her age group.

Michelle Kretzschmar won two silver medals and one bronze medal in the 50m backstroke, 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke respectively.

Andre Steyn took a total of 28.3 seconds off his six swims and won two silver medals in the 200m individual medley and 50m freestyle.

The other medal came from Janine Oosthuizen in the 50m backstroke, where she won a bronze medal, while Ricardo Carthew improved by 44.84 seconds on his overall events.

The club will be hosting a relay challenge for all swimmers, including casual swimmers.
