Who would have thought that being pulled over by the cops on your very first day arriving on the coast would be fun? Surely not! And not just cops, everyone from safety, transport, traffic officers, police, traffic cones and who is the guy in a suit – is he a body guard? Cars, bikers and caravans… yes everyone was pulled over at the Hibberdene turnoff this morning.
Just imagine what was going through the minds of the visitors.
Who is the lady with the big gold chain and why is she greeting all the drivers, shaking hands and exchanging smiles? This lady is none other than HCM Mayor Cynthia Mqwebu wishing visitors to the South Coast a very warm welcome. This is her Happy Roadblock, her Welcome and her way of meeting tourists.
And with that warm welcome, comes an ice cold Coca Cola and a goody bag brimming with gifts. The gifts consisted of a variety of goodies, from cooler boxes to Frisbees, along with some munchies for the car, the bible of the South Coast – the Southern Explorer and one of the local rags – the Fever – and a Summer Programme to get everyone up to speed on where to go, what to do and how to do it.
Ugu South Coast Tourism’s CEO Justin Mackrory says `It is exactly these kind of initiatives that bring people to our beautiful area and keep them coming back for more. It’s the personal touch. Who knows of any other tourism route in the country where visitors are handed quite substantial goody bags alongside a huge smile and personal great greeting from the Mayor?’
“We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all authorities involved in ensuring this Roadblock of Happiness was such a success and may this be the start of a fantastic stay for all our visitors and guests. We wish you a very safe, sunny and enjoyable season”.
