STATEMENT BY NSRI SHELLY BEACH STATION COMMANDER JEREMIAH JACKSON:
Just before 14h00, Sunday, 23rd September, NSRI Shelly Beach duty crew were activated following reports from Ray Nkonyeni Municipal Protection Services of a drowning in progress at Margate Pier.
Our NSRI sea rescue vehicle with NSRI rescue swimmers onboard responded and Police Search and Rescue, the SA Police Services, Tower 13 Lifeguard Services lifeguards, Ray Nkonyeni Fire and Rescue Services and Med-Evac ambulance services responded.
On arrival on the scene a female, 49 years of age and believed to be from Boksburg, was found in shallow surf by the beach after reportedly being caught in rip currents South of the Margate fishing pier, an area not protected by duty lifeguards, before currents swept her to the beach where Tower 13 lifeguards arriving on the scene pulled the female out of shallow surf and initiated CPR (Cardio Pulonary Resuscitation) efforts which were continued by paramedics but sadly after all CPR efforts were exhausted the female was declared deceased.
The body of the female has been taken into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services and Police have opened an inquest docket.
Condolences are conveyed to family of the deceased female.
