Des Govender warms up the tyres on his white 1984, Toyota Supra while Mano Khan lines up Pat Reddy in his maroon 1973 Ford Escort.

Dezzi Raceway will host its first ever drag racing event organised by KZN Drag Racing on Saturday.

The recently sanctioned track by Motorsport South Africa boasts a ¼ mile drag strip that will welcome over 85 competitive drivers from across KZN as well as 15 national record-breaking vehicles.

Legendary drag racer Mano Khan will open the event with the privilege of setting the first runs off down the newly widened drag strip.

Khan is credited for racing the first ever street-legal car to break the 10-second quarter mile, over 10 years ago; a feat that drivers today with all their modern technology aspire and battle to break.

“Mano is working on fixing up his 30-year-old Ford Escort which he used to race all those years ago. We can’t wait to see history repeat itself and have Mano on track again.” said event organiser Michelle Lewis.

The Dezzi Raceway boasts the only permanent drag racing facility in KZN.

“Drivers have been desperate for a safe family orientated venue at sea level. Many drivers are looking forward to officially testing their vehicle capabilities while their families can watch on,” said KZN Motorsport Representative Darren Lewis.

The one-day event will run under the MSA Street Drag Racing rules, in the ‘Heads up Racing’ format.

The event will also showcase a collection of sub-10-second vehicles including Czank Racing rail cars and Quentin Boylans record breaking Honda.

“Many of these exhibition cars have never been seen in KZN. It will be a real spectacle for the crowd and we are expecting the biggest turnout the raceway has ever held” said Des Gutzeit, Dezzi Raceway owner.

“Illegal drag racing in the province has been a challenge for the community for years. We welcome regular events like this, that help grow the sport by giving drivers professional facilities and well run events to enjoy and to use to improve their racing” said Motorsport SA Chairman of Drifting, Drags and Spinning, Wally Pappas.
