The KwaZulu-Natal ladies coastals hockey team got the South African Country Districts tournament off to an excellent start in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

The KwaZulu-Natal side, bolstered by Port Shepstone Hockey Club trio Fortunate Mnikathi, Kerry Herbert and vice-captain Marike Durrheim, secured a 2-0 win over Eastern Province Raiders with Mari-Lee Visser scoring a double.

KwaZulu-Natal dominated in the first chukka, going 1-0 up as Visser found the back of the goal.

They missed a lot of opportunities in the second chukka, but converted another field goal in the third chukka.

The last chukka saw the Raiders come back firing, playing hard and aggressive hockey, but the coastals’ defence kept their cool and didn’t allow the Raiders to score.
