Uvongo Tennis Club, once again, hosted a most successful KwaZulu-Natal Seniors Tennis Tournament over the weekend in the most perfect weather, assisted by the use of Douglas Mitchell Tennis Club’s facilities.

Players came from all over KwaZulu-Natal, from Umtata and as far afield as Johannesburg where a six-man squad came from Weltervreden Park Tennis Club.

The event was sponsored by a number of local businesses including Hibiscus Retirement Village, Buco Hardware, Uvongo Spar, Wolf Security, Doug’s Hardware, The Waffle House, Go Zone Water and a very generous donation from Ian Turnbull, an Eastern Cape farmer.

KZN Tennis were well represented by six of their officials, including their President, Leonard Morgas, Dave Vincent and secretary Maureen Davisworth.

Lunches on both days were provided by Café Munro with oodles of cakes and savoury snacks from club members and boerie rolls on sale all day. On Saturday, there was a Dinner Dance at Douglas Mitchell Sports Club as a highlight of the event.

The tournament was divided into an A and B section. The A section had four teams of eight players made up by pairing of players of equal strength and the B section four teams of six players.

Play in both sections was of a high standard and fiercely competitive throughout the two days. The winning team in the A section were the Leprechauns, beating the Kiwis by 88 to 72 and the B section saw the Wallabies beat the Blossoms 55 to 41.

All the players were winners as they are still able to play tennis of a high standard with some in their 60’s and 70’s.

The weather played along and even the Municipal water came back in time. Most importantly, the Bokke made everyone’s day with their outstanding win, which was watched by all the tennis players during a brunch break on two TVs in the club house, provided by Satellite Babu DSTV Connection, to make for a most successful tournament.
