What was once a practice venue for KwaZulu-Natal snooker league player Selvin Moodley has now become a snooker league venue for 16 players at Margate Country Club.
The league, which started over a month ago, has a mixture of experienced snooker players and some youngsters who have never played the game before. Because of the interest shown in the sport, the club decided to allow for another snooker table to be installed.
Flip Fourie, who is also very passionate about snooker at the club, has donated his snooker table for the league. Renovations are in progress and the players eagerly await the use of the new table. In the interim, weekly league matches are in progress at the club.
Qmasters, from Durban, have made a generous sponsorship towards the setting up and reconditioning of both tables and they are also in the process of starting a Pro-circuit for Snooker in South Africa. Two local businesses have also recently sponsored the snooker section.
The good news for the South Coast is that the South African Cue Sports Federation, together with the South African Snooker and Billiards Association, have decided that this area can affiliate directly to them as a district. The Margate Country Club have welcomed this and have given the snooker players the assurance that they will assist them going forward.
Still to come before the league ends in December, will be the Doubles Championship and the Singles Club Championship. Also, two-times KwaZulu-Natal champion and Durban and Districts winner Moodley, together with other senior players, are willing to offer their expertise and knowledge of the game to youngsters by coaching them.
A youth league and coaching clinic will be held on Saturdays at Margate Country Club from 9am to 1 pm. For further information regarding the youth league or joining the league for the new season, contact Moodley on 083 272 1757 or Marinda Muller on 039 312 0571.
