The official annual Burry Stander Memorial Ride/Walk will take place at the Burry Stander Bike Park in Umtentweni on Tuesday, 3 January.
Cyclists will once again come together across the world in remembrance of the South African mountain biking legend, who passed away at just 25 in accident involving a taxi in Shelly Beach on January 3, 2013.
The Stander family will host the official memorial event at the bike park named after the former two-time Olympian situated in Umtentweni, where hundreds are expected to meet to honour the national hero.
Following a prayer, cyclists will set off on a 12km ride up the famous ‘Mushroom’ hill that Stander scaled countless times in training, while walkers will enjoy a roughly 10km stroll.
Registration starts at 6am and participants are asked for a R50 donation in support of the Burry Stander Foundation. All cyclists must wear helmets.
Refreshments will be available from the coffee shop, where participants and their families can socialise after the ride/walk.
Stander’s mother Mandie asked the local community and holidaymakers to come out in numbers.
“We would like to invite everyone who is in the area to be part of this event,” she told eHowzit.
“We don’t want Burry to become forgotten and it’s an opportunity to remind people how crucial road safety is.”
