NSRI Shelly Beach retrieves elderly woman’s body from surf

STATEMENT BY NSRI SHELLY BEACH STATION COMMANDER JEREMIAH JACKSON:

At 07h00, Wednesday, 06 September, NSRI Shelly Beach duty crew were activated following a request for assistance from a family in Umtentweni reporting their 71 year old female family member missing from a walk on the beach in the early hours of the morning.

NSRI Shelly Beach rescue swimmers, Police Search and Rescue and Med-Evac private ambulance services responded.

An off-duty NSRI Shelly Beach trainee member who was at Umtentweni fishing at the time reported to have spotted something floating in the water about 70 meters off-shore and the NSRI trainee swam out and finding the body of a female floating in the surf he recovered the body to the beach where he was met by Police Search and Rescue officers who had just arrived on the scene and the female was sadly declared deceased by paramedics.

The body of the female has been taken into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services and Police have opened an inquest docket.

Sincere Condolences are conveyed to the family of the deceased woman.
