Paddock equestrian Stuart Bowley was among the top performers in the recent Spurwing Horse Trials held in Karkloof.
Bowley, riding Calke Abbey, competed in the 80cm class where he placed forth following solid showings in dressage, show jumping and cross-country.
“It was an outstanding competition, one of the best I’ve ever been to,” Bowley, who boasts over 30 years of experience, told eHowz!t.
“It ran on greased wheels. It was very well organised and everything about it was good. It was a beautiful setting in the Karkloof valley surrounded by mountains and pine and fir plantations.
“The cross-country jumps were of an international standard. My cross-country course was about two kilometres long and had about 18 jumps, it was very well built.”
The 63-year-old felt his dressage wasn’t up to the standard he had hoped but was pleased with his form in the show jumping and cross-country disciplines.
“My show jumping and cross-country were clear, but my dressage wasn’t so good.
“The horse was very excited, so he was marked down and didn’t do as well as he should’ve done.
“He was raring to go and his cross-country was absolutely outstanding, he just flew around.”
