The annual KwaZulu-Natal Junior Tennis Tournament took centre stage at Uvongo, Umtentweni and Douglas Mitchell Tennis Clubs over the Easter weekend with some of the best young players around the country doing battle for top honours.
The 50 young players entered in the tournament contested in four age groups, namely U12, U14, U16 and U18 across two formats, singles and doubles.
Spectators were treated to some excellent, hard-hitting tennis, tears, outbursts, shrieks and smiles.
Players who earned titles were Sean Wilson (U12 boys), Zahra Dreyer-Ferreira (U12 girls), Nicholas Hamilton (U14 boys), Taryn Nadler (U14 girls), Nicholas Hamilton and Jean du Toit (U14 boys doubles), Vania Manchev (U16 girls), Keira Naidoo and Taryn Nadler (U16 girls doubles) and Alex Edley (U18 boys).
Unfortunately, rain won on Sunday and all finals scheduled to be played were therefore cancelled.
Secretary of Uvongo Tennis Club, Dianne Digby said, “We look forward to hosting another edition of the KZN Junior Tournament. The tournament has proved to be a great success in the past and together with our club sponsor, Uvongo Spar, we are looking to make this one of our flagship tournaments of the year. We are committed to the development of tennis, especially at grassroots level”.
